MEET TERRY SVAT

D.C. area artist Terry Svat is a successful printmaker who enjoys capturing the elements in life with innovative printmaking. Her work is introspective, her style is contemporary, and her method is hand-pulled prints.

Throughout life, art continues to be her vocation and avocation. After graduating with a BFA from Kent State University, she worked in commercial art in Cleveland, Minneapolis, and Washington, D.C.

When her family began living and working abroad, she studied, taught, and worked in many art related fields in the former Soviet Union, Chile, Argentina, Panama and Germany. In the mid 90’s she received her MA in Art Therapy from George Washington University.

Although one can never truly enter the thought processes that lead artists to make their most compelling images, one is drawn to speculate as to why some visual statements are more enduring and evocative than others. Some people leave marks that speak for all times, whether or not their images may have spoken to the artists’ immediate circle of influence during their lifetime….. Each of Terry Svat’s images included in this exhibition is filled with iconology. Each merits in depth iconographic examination, but it is every bit as satisfying to enjoy the work by just being with ir and letting it speak, as so many mark makers have spoken to Terry Svat.

Terry discovered that the faith in the old gods, their myths of creation, and fairy tales of their culture were alive in her art and within herself. This may be an explanation for the strong radiation she puts into her work, a radiation from which you the viewer cannot withdraw.
